'Foothills Profile #3' 16"X16" Acrylic mixed media on birch panel |
I need to let this 'rest' for a bit. Not sure if needs more paint, less paint, more collage, more line.....maybe it doesn't need anything else or maybe....
A rather indecisive painting day.
On the road trip, there were small cliffs along the freeway, that were made up of chunky square blocks of earth. So interesting. Why do some rocks form round and some square? Well, I was wondering as we passed.
ReplyDeleteThis piece makes me wonder too. Is the storm ending, or just beginning? Or is it one of those days that stays grey but quiet? Interested to see if you add to it, or don't :)
Thanks Sheila - I was so intrigued by your photos of the rock structures on your trip - yes - exactly...why there, why that shape? I know there is a 'technical' answer but I think as artists we see beyond that. Not sure about adding more, especially when I am not sure about the why and the what. I am looking forward to seeing more of your paintings and perhaps some imagery from you trip. Have a lovely day
DeleteJanet, I have no opinion to help you resolve your indecision but I sure do love what I see here. There is such a lovely essence of abstraction here—your painting is at once 'nothing' more than some mixed media on a birch panel and 'everything' that such mixed media on a birch panel can evoke … a feeling of BEing the earth and sky rather than merely seeing them, a journey into the earth, a walk through a museum, a hike taken fifty years ago, a conversation with preschool siblings. Wow. Love the collage, the scribbles, the scritches, the muted colors, the luminescences.
ReplyDeleteThank you Dotty. Will say it again - good to see through others' eyes and I always, always appreciate your thoughts. This 'abstraction' is new in some ways for me. I recently attended a 5 day intensive workshop and that was one thing the instructor and I discussed about my work - removing the more obvious 'landscape structures' when painting. Maybe I am having trouble with this painting because of this - I am inclined to leave it and see how I feel about it down the road. Thanks again!
DeleteThanks for the input about behind-the-scenes aspects of this painting. One of the happy bits of my recent painting, 'Simplicity,' was that it became an abstract landscape but NOT because that was my intent.
ReplyDeleteWise words Dotty.....thank you ox
ReplyDeleteWell if you operate on this again, please post the update, not sure what you would do to improve, but you have to go with what you see and feel
