Trying to keep with the basics on Day 24. This past fall I took a 5 day workshop with intuitive artist
Joan Fullerton. I took some time today to go back through some of the notes I took during this workshop. These notes are not just 'how to's' but also Joan's thoughts and ideas about painting. So what I decided to concentrate on today was value contrast and marks to give depth and using veiling to add another layer. When I look at this painting I did keep enough value contrast, but could have pushed the veiling more in some areas and less in others. What I was trying to achieve - in Joan's words was this.....
'When you look at a painting across the room
you want it to make you and others come closer.
When you get closer you want enough detail to draw you in'

Joan is participating in this month's 30in30 and I would encourage you to have a look at her paintings.
And one more thought from Joan.....
'You need to fail - let go - in order to maybe get something amazing.'
'...Take a chance...'
I love this piece. I think you achieved great depth and variations in the colors.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Carol
Deleteand.....I love your work! Beautiful colour and line. I tried to leave a comment - but will try again.
DeleteThank you Janet for sharing your notes from Joan's workshop ! quite uplifting...
ReplyDeleteYou have painted an intriguing painting with great texrures !
Hi Martine - will share some more after the 30in 30 is complete. Meant to do a write up last fall.
DeleteHi Janet, love the bite-size bits of information you share—enough to completely whet my appetite and make me want to abandon today's to-do list in favor of heading to my studio immediately, but not so much as to overwhelm me. Perfect!
ReplyDeleteWas the workshop with Joan live?
I enlarged the image of your painting on my computer screen and walked across the room. Yup—it made me want to come closer. The contrasts and the not-highly-defined mystery of it invited me in for a face-to-face. Then—yup—all sorts of detail and nuance to explore. The bright red spritzes and the pop of reflected light on the left side of the vessel particularly resonated.
The workshop with Joan was live. She is a lovely person and wonderful instructor. There were lots of demos, quick exercises to loosen up and constructive critique. She had some very insightful thoughts to share about art, painting and being an artist. Thank you for your comments today.
DeleteThanks so much for sharing with us Janet. I love the "comfort" of the denim blue, the play of light and shadow, and the familiar patterns. Love the spots and smears, the warmth. And I really like the white marks on the blue. Looks like an after thought, but is just the right touch. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHi Sheila - thank you for the great comments. Have to get over to your blog and check out your latest. Take care.
